2026 Symposium

The Rutgers International Law and Human Rights Journal is proud to present its third annual symposium, “Law, Heritage, and Identity: International Legal Frameworks for Cultural Preservation,” to be held at the Center for Law and Justice in Newark. This year’s program brings together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to examine the growing threats facing cultural heritage and the evolving role of international law in protecting it.

Across the world, cultural heritage sites, artifacts, and traditions are increasingly endangered by armed conflict, deliberate destruction, illicit trafficking, and disputes over restitution and repatriation. These challenges raise urgent legal questions about how international frameworks, including cultural property conventions, human rights instruments, and international criminal law, can more effectively safeguard cultural heritage.

Building on the strong engagement generated by the Journal’s previous symposia, this event will further Rutgers Law School’s commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue on pressing global issues and strengthening interdisciplinary conversations about the preservation of cultural heritage and identity. Please use the QR code in the flyer attached or this link to RSVP!
